Choosing a hospital in India: accreditation and the questions to ask

What NABH and JCI accreditation mean, how to check them, and eight questions to ask any hospital.

5 minute read · Updated October 2026

India has many excellent hospitals. The right one for you depends on your condition, the specialist's experience and practical things like language support and location. Accreditation is a good first filter.

What accreditation means

NABH is India's National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers. It assesses patient safety, infection control, clinical processes and patient rights. JCI, Joint Commission International, is an international accreditation used by hospitals worldwide. NABL accredits laboratories.

Accreditation applies to a specific hospital, not to a whole hospital group, and it has an expiry date. You can check current status on the NABH website and the JCI website.

Beyond accreditation

Ask about the specialist, not only the hospital. How many of your procedure does the team perform each year? Who will actually operate? Is there an intensive care unit for your type of surgery?

Eight questions to ask any hospital

  1. Who will be my treating specialist, and what is their experience with my condition?
  2. What exactly does the estimate include, and what could add to it?
  3. How many days will I be in hospital, and how long should I stay in India afterwards?
  4. Which implant, lens or device brand will be used?
  5. Is there an international patient desk and an interpreter for my language?
  6. Can one family member stay with me?
  7. What happens if there is a complication or I need to stay longer?
  8. How will follow-up work after I return home?

How we shortlist hospitals

We only suggest hospitals with current NABH or JCI accreditation, an international patient department and specialists experienced in your treatment. Read more on our hospitals page.
