India medical visa: what international patients need to know

e-Medical visa, attendant visas, the hospital invitation letter and countries that use a different route.

5 minute read · Updated October 2026

Visa rules change, so always confirm the latest requirements on the official Indian government portal, indianvisaonline.gov.in, before you apply. This guide explains how the medical visa works for most patients as of October 2026.

The e-Medical visa

Citizens of most countries can apply online for an e-Medical visa. Key points:

  • It allows up to three entries and is valid for 60 days from your first arrival.
  • It covers treatment at a recognised hospital in India, including Ayush treatment.
  • It cannot be extended or converted to another visa type, so plan your stay carefully.
  • Your passport must be valid for at least six months from arrival, with two blank pages.

Visas for companions

Up to two people can travel with you on e-Medical Attendant visas, which are linked to your e-Medical visa. Attendants are usually close family members.

The hospital invitation letter

Since April 2025 the medical invitation letter is generated through the official government portal after the hospital completes its side of the process. A letter printed by the hospital on its own is no longer enough. Your coordinator confirms with the hospital that this step is done before you apply.

Countries with a different route

  • Nepal: citizens do not need a visa to enter India.
  • Maldives: citizens can usually enter without a visa for up to 90 days; longer treatment needs a medical visa from the Indian High Commission.
  • Bangladesh: apply through the Indian Visa Application Centre (IVAC).
  • Nigeria: not on the e-Visa list as of September 2026; apply for a regular medical visa through the Indian High Commission or its visa centre.

Use our visa checker to see the route for your nationality.

Arriving in India

Since April 2026 all foreign nationals must submit an e-Arrival Card online within 72 hours before arrival. Biometrics are taken at the airport. Enter through one of the designated international airports; Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Bengaluru all qualify.

How long it takes

Official processing is quick, but in practice allow at least one to two weeks, and longer between October and March. Apply as soon as your invitation is ready.

Documents usually needed
  • Passport scan and a recent photo
  • Medical invitation generated through the portal
