Understanding your treatment estimate

What a hospital estimate usually covers, what it often leaves out, and how to compare two estimates fairly.

4 minute read · Updated October 2026

A treatment estimate is the hospital's best forecast of your bill, based on your reports. The final bill can differ if your condition or recovery is different from expected. Knowing what is in the estimate helps you compare hospitals fairly.

Usually included

  • Surgeon and anaesthetist fees
  • Operating theatre charges
  • Room charges for the expected number of days, by room type
  • Routine medicines and consumables during the stay
  • Standard tests during admission

Often not included

  • Tests before admission, if not already done
  • Premium implants, lenses or devices
  • Extra days in hospital or intensive care
  • Blood products
  • Medicines to take home
  • Treatment of complications or other conditions
  • Accommodation, food and transport outside the hospital

How to compare two estimates

Put them side by side and check that the room type, the number of days and the implant or device are the same. A lower estimate with a shorter stay or a basic implant is not a like-for-like comparison.

Paying

Hospitals usually ask for a deposit on admission and settle the balance before discharge. International cards and bank transfers are commonly accepted. Ask the hospital for its payment terms in writing.
