Ayurveda and yoga in India

India is the home of Ayurveda and yoga. People travel to Kerala, Rishikesh, Mysuru and Goa for Panchakarma detox, Ayurvedic rejuvenation, yoga retreats and teacher training, often as a recovery stay after medical treatment.

What people come for

1

Panchakarma

A classical Ayurvedic cleansing programme of oil therapies, steam and other procedures, planned by an Ayurveda doctor over two to three weeks.

2

Rejuvenation (Rasayana)

Shorter programmes focused on rest, stress relief, diet and gentle therapies.

3

Yoga retreats

Daily yoga, breathing practice and meditation in an ashram or retreat, from a few days to several weeks.

4

Yoga teacher training

Residential 200-hour courses of three to four weeks, often certified by Yoga Alliance.

5

Recovery stays

A quiet Ayurveda or yoga stay after hospital treatment, only when your surgeon agrees you are ready.

Most residential programmes include stay, meals and therapies. Prices vary widely between a simple ashram and a luxury resort.

Choosing a centre safely

  • Look for doctors with a BAMS degree (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery)
  • Ayush hospitals and centres can hold NABH accreditation; ask if yours does
  • Ask for a written programme: therapies, doctor visits, meals and room
  • Tell the centre about your medical conditions and medicines
  • Tell your own doctors about any herbal medicines you take home

Visa and combining with treatment

  • Treatment at a recognised Ayush centre is covered by the e-Medical visa
  • A short yoga programme is generally possible on an e-Tourist visa
  • After surgery, start Ayurveda or yoga only when your surgeon agrees
  • Kochi is a good base for hospital treatment followed by an Ayurveda stay
Check the visa route for your nationality

Questions about Ayurveda and yoga

Ayurveda and yoga support wellbeing; they do not replace medical treatment.

Does Ayurveda replace my medical treatment?

No. Ayurveda and yoga can support wellbeing and recovery, but they do not replace treatment from your doctor. Tell your doctors about any herbal medicines you take.

Which visa do I need?

Treatment at a recognised Ayush centre is covered by the e-Medical visa. A short yoga programme is generally possible on an e-Tourist visa. Check the latest rules on the official portal.

When is the best season?

Kerala's centres are open all year; the monsoon months (June to August) are traditionally considered good for Ayurvedic therapies. Rishikesh is most comfortable from February to April and September to November.
